Integrating stormwater management is viewed by some as a difficult or needless proposition....  for two primary reasons:

1.  More thought must be applied at the beginning of the design process.  This can be a seemingly insurmountable problem on many projects, as the client usually wants a quick layout for minimal fee.

 

 "We just don't have the fee (time) to reliably size stormwater management at the beginning of the project."

 

2.  Design personnel must either be experienced in stormwater management design or work very closely with those who do.  Often, the initial layout work is performed by Land Planners or Landscape Architects.  Way too often, neither discipline has devoted enough training or experience to stormwater management.

TSA has developed techniques and software tools that significantly reduce the amount of time (fee) required to reliably size and integrate stormwater management into any project. 

As a site is configured - with consideration of grading (see Green Grading) the following design process is applied to potential bioretention locations. 

1.  When configuring land uses,  apply bioretention layout guidelines:

Consider slope direction
bullet
§Maximize green areas in down-slope areas or sumps
bullet
§Intercept impervious drainage with green space
bullet
§Potential Bioretention areas = ANY area that can capture runoff from impervious services
bullet
§1’ Max depth adds flexibility

 2.  Locate Bioretention Area:

bullet
Layout Bioretention Area as large as possible
bullet
Design as a landscaped area
bullet
Assume 1’ depth – consider grading as you go
bullet
Assume yard inlet or other overflow method

3.  Determine the approximate contributing drainage area limits and footprint of the BMP. 

4.  Measure the drainage area and input into TSA TOOLS.  Compare sizing requirements with the BMP footprint.  See Example.

5.  Revise footprint or grading as required.  Move on to the next BMP.

6.  Address all drainage on the site.

7. Assume end-of-pipe BMP area for any areas not captured and quantity management

Using CAD and TSA TOOLS, each facility can be reliably sized in minutes.
